A message to Parents, Guardians and Community:

As we reflect on the fall and the challenges faced, we would like to share with you the progress that Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) continues to make in addressing the driver shortage.

Throughout the fall, OSTA has made steady progress in reducing the number of long-term cancelled runs, signifying a positive trend in our efforts to stabilize our transportation services. While we acknowledge that some drivers have not returned after the holidays, some permanently and others temporarily, we want to reassure you that OSTA remains committed to overcoming these challenges and remains committed to reinstating transportation for those affected by the driver shortage.

Key Highlights of Progress:

Driver Training: Our Operators have been actively engaged in training new drivers to join our team. This proactive approach ensures that we are continually building a pool of skilled professionals to meet the demands of our transportation services.

Reduced Driver Shortage: Through collaborative efforts with our operators, we have successfully reduced the current driver shortage to approximately 13, down from 15 as of December 15th. This positive development is a testament to the dedication of our team and the commitment to providing reliable transportation services.

Long Term Run Cancellations Reduction: The current driver shortage, while still a challenge, now results in the long-term cancellation of approximately 0.7% of all transportation services managed by OSTA, equating to 39 runs. This reduction has been achieved through strategic measures, including new hires and the consolidation of existing runs based on a thorough review of ridership.

Next Update: OSTA is committed to keeping you informed of our progress. Our next driver shortage update will be provided on January 30, 2024.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all parents, guardians and the community for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this period. Additionally, we express our appreciation to the current drivers and Operators for their dedication in ensuring the safe transportation of students to and from school every day.

Your continued support is invaluable to us, and we remain optimistic that our collective efforts will lead to further improvements in the coming weeks.
