OSTA Provides Update on Bus Driver Shortage

Last Updated on: 30th January 2024, 02:57 pm

Ottawa School Transportation Authority (OSTA) is providing the latest update with respect to the ongoing bus driver shortage:

Driver Shortage: As stated in our mid-January update, we always experience a reduction in the number of drivers available at this time of year. Some drivers do not return after the holidays; others take extended holidays. For these two weeks, more drivers resigned than were hired. As a result, the driver shortage we reported in mid-January has not changed significantly. The current number of drivers we are short is 14, with 1% of all transportation services not covered. We want to reassure you that OSTA remains committed to overcoming these challenges and reinstating transportation for those affected routes as soon
as possible.

Driver Training: Our Operators have been actively training new drivers to join our team. Presently, we have 16 new drivers in training. This proactive approach ensures that we are continually building a pool of skilled professionals to meet the demands of our transportation services.

Next Update: OSTA is committed to keeping you informed of our progress. We will provide our next driver shortage update on February 15th, 2024.

We sincerely thank all parents, guardians and the community for your patience and understanding as we navigate through this period. Additionally, we express our appreciation to the current drivers and Operators for their dedication to ensuring the safe transportation of students to and from school every day. Your continued support is invaluable to us, and we remain optimistic that our collective efforts will lead to further improvements in the coming weeks.
