Ottawa Student Transportation Authority Releases Statement about Compensation for Parents, Guardians and Students

OSTA is committed to rebuilding our relationship with community members who depend on reliable transportation to get to school. Part of re-earning the trust of parents, guardians and students is to be transparent with information.

Due to the driver shortage, OSTA does save some money through withheld payments for services not provided. However, the OSTA Board of Directors is repurposing those withheld payments to fund other solutions that result in new, available drivers from other transportation operators in the Ottawa region.

Unfortunately, OSTA does not have funds to compensate parents and guardians paying to transport their children to school following a bus cancellation. Even with repurposed savings, OSTA has a $6.5 million budget deficit. The deficit is being addressed with supplemental funds from member school Boards and the Ministry of Education.

We understand many families are facing significant financial difficulties. To address these individual situations, the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) encourage families experiencing crisis situations to contact their school Principals. The Principal will work with them to find solutions to help address their individual concerns.
